If you have lived in Lorena for more than one season, you already know the calendar between late August and early November is not really a calendar. It is a schedule taped to a refrigerator, and every home game on it decides where you eat, when you eat, and whether the drive-thru line at the I-35 frontage stretches past the Exxon canopy or clears in six minutes.
This year that schedule is unusually front-loaded on home turf. The 2026 varsity slate has the Leopards hosting five district and non-district opponents at Leopard Field, all at 7:30 p.m., with a bye tucked into September that gives residents a rare quiet Friday between the Robinson matchup and the district opener at Caldwell.
The Real Thesis: Five Home Dates Run The Town
Leopard Field seats 3,500, which is roughly twice the population of Lorena proper. On home Fridays the town's dinner economy pulls forward by ninety minutes, empties out at 7:15, and then reforms in two very different waves after the final whistle. On away Fridays the same restaurants operate on a normal weeknight rhythm and the frontage road is quiet by 8:30. Reading those two rhythms correctly is what separates a resident from a visitor.

The scrimmage against La Vega at home on August 14 and the trip to Glen Rose on August 20 are the warm-up. The season effectively opens away at Lago Vista on August 28, which is worth flagging because that first Friday feels like it should be big and is not.
Where People Actually Eat Before Kickoff
The pre-game window in Lorena is narrow. Kitchens want you seated by 5:45 if you plan to eat, pay, and be in your seat before the anthem. That window rewards restaurants with fast tickets and punishes anything that looks like a leisurely sit-down.
Lorena's Restaurant on the frontage road is the default. Regulars will tell you the covered patio and back dining room absorb the pre-game surge better than the main floor, and the kitchen runs Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., which means it is genuinely built to handle a 5:30 crowd. Catering trays are also an option if your group is bigger than a table, and they will package a menu order to go for a tailgate at Leopard Lane.
Double-R Burger and Pizza Junction sit in a different category. Both are consistently among the highest-rated restaurants in Lorena on independent review sites, and both work best when you are eating with kids who want food in ten minutes rather than thirty. A Pizza Junction pie split three ways in a driveway on Center Street is a much older Friday tradition than most newcomers realize.
Downtown, the block around 102 to 113 East Center Street has quietly become a small food corridor. The Lorena EDC's Business Improvement Grant program has funded exterior work at Pepper West Gals and 113 E. Center Street through a 50 percent match for painting, awnings, and signage, and a Texas Department of Agriculture capital grant earlier put roughly $150,000 into ADA ramps, parking, and drainage on the same stretch. That is not a fact you cite at dinner, but it is why Center Street looks like a walkable block on a Friday afternoon and not a service road.
The Bojangles Question
The genuinely new variable on the fall map is the Bojangles at 12016 I-35, the first Central Texas location for the Carolina fried-chicken chain, sharing a building with the Roadster Travel Center and Exxon. It runs 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily per the store's posted hours, which means it is one of the few options in Lorena that is still serving after a 10 p.m. postgame release.
Residents have sorted out the traffic pattern by now. On home Fridays the drive-thru backs up between 5:00 and 6:15 with pre-game families, empties completely during the game, and then fills again from about 9:45 to 10:15 with the post-game wave. If you want a biscuit sandwich on a Saturday morning without waiting, arrive before 8:30. The dining room is the underused half of that building.
The Away-Week Correction
Away Fridays are the resident's secret. The 8:28 opener at Lago Vista, the district trip to Caldwell on September 25, the Franklin game on October 9, and the Troy game on October 23 all pull a meaningful slice of Lorena out of town for the evening. Kitchens that would be slammed on a home night are half full, and reservations at Lorena's Restaurant are effectively unnecessary.
If you have out-of-town family in for a weekend, the away Fridays are the nights to book a table. If you are a home cook who normally hates Friday grocery runs, the H-E-B up in Hewitt at 6:00 p.m. on an away-Leopards night is genuinely calmer than it will be on a home night, when half of Lorena is buying ice, folding chairs, and a case of water for the stadium lot.
After The Game
Two waves come out of Leopard Field. The first wave, families with younger kids, leaves at the start of the fourth quarter and is home by 9:45. The second wave, the students and the diehards, releases between 9:50 and 10:15 and produces the only real late-night rush Lorena has all week.
For that second wave, the practical options are narrow and worth naming:
- Bojangles at 12016 I-35 until 10 p.m., drive-thru only if you arrive after the counter closes
- Chicken Express at 100 N Frontage Rd for a fast late order
- Anywhere on the North Hewitt Drive corridor in Hewitt, a ten-minute drive north on the frontage road, for late-night chain options
- A pizza pre-ordered from Pizza Junction for pickup on the way home, which locals do more often than they admit
Raymond's Southern Kitchen off I-35 Exit 322 is a solid pre-game option earlier in the day but does not hold late hours. Jessie & Delight's Cafe at 108 E Center Street and Texas Cheese House at 102 E Center Street are daytime rooms, not postgame ones. Confusing the two categories is the most common newcomer mistake in Lorena's food scene.
Saturday Morning, When The Town Exhales
The morning after a home Friday has its own texture. McBrayer Park is quiet until about 9:30, at which point the youth leagues start warming up on the fields near the pavilion that Boy Scout Troop 462 repainted a few years back with EDC-provided materials. Center Street is a slower walk than usual. The frontage road picks up around 10 a.m. when the I-35 travel crowd rediscovers the Bojangles biscuit menu.
The Lorena EDC's Downtown Improvements Project, funded through the Texas Department of Agriculture, is the reason Saturday mornings on Center Street feel like a proper small-town block. ADA ramps, resurfaced parking, and better storm drainage do not sound like lifestyle amenities, but they are why a family can push a stroller from a car to a cafe door without dodging a curb cut. Those investments were made years ago and are now doing quiet work every weekend.
Reading Your Own Fall Correctly
The point of laying this out is not to hand a schedule to someone new. It is to say what long-time residents already feel in their bones: five Fridays out of ten this fall will pull the town toward Leopard Lane, and the other five will hand you back a normal evening.
